October 15 filing readiness for an extended 2025 individual return
For a valid extension of a 2025 U.S. individual return, organize unresolved items, review responsibilities and filing evidence before October 15, 2026.

Applies to: U.S. federal individual income tax; tax year 2025 filed in 2026. Applies to a valid timely extension. State rules and special relief require separate checks.
If your 2025 U.S. individual income tax return has a valid, timely extension, the next useful step is to identify exactly what still prevents filing. A folder described as “nearly complete” is less useful than a short list of unresolved questions with named owners.
The IRS’s April 14, 2026 announcement identifies October 15, 2026 as the extended filing date for eligible individual taxpayers who requested their extension by April 15. The usual April 15 payment deadline was not extended by that filing extension. This is a completion checklist for an existing extension, not instructions to request one retroactively. Certain disaster, military and other special circumstances can have different rules; confirm applicability with the IRS and your preparer, and check state obligations separately. Build a return-specific readiness sheet
Use one sheet per taxpayer and return year. Record the extension evidence, preparer, reviewer, outstanding documents, unresolved questions and the next agreed review date. Store the actual tax records securely; the tracking sheet can use document labels rather than full identifying numbers.
A useful status describes what someone can act on. Replace “waiting on investments” with “reviewer needs the corrected statement and confirmation that the earlier version has been replaced.” Replace “business figures pending” with the particular reconciliation or question that remains open.
Separate three kinds of unfinished work
- Missing evidence: identify who can provide the document and when.
- Unresolved treatment: give the preparer the underlying facts rather than guessing an answer to close the list.
- Filing completion: plan the review, authorization and confirmation steps with the person responsible for filing.
For example, a taxpayer may have supplied every requested statement while one corrected document is still under review. “All documents received” and “return ready to authorize” are different statuses. Keeping both prevents an administrative checklist from being mistaken for a completed tax review.
Keep filing and payment evidence separate
Create distinct places for filing confirmations and payment records. Record what each receipt actually confirms. A transmission attempt, a payment record and evidence of acceptance serve different purposes; do not let one stand in for the others. Ask the preparer to resolve any rejection or missing confirmation promptly.

Extension completion questions
Can this checklist establish that my extension is valid?
No. Obtain the relevant confirmation and have the responsible preparer verify the taxpayer, year and circumstances.
Should I wait until every question is answered before contacting the preparer?
Share the specific unresolved list early so the reviewer can set priorities and identify alternatives.
Can I reuse this deadline for a company return?
No. This article addresses individual returns. Entity returns have their own filing rules and extension situations.
