QuickBooks Online error 108: check the bank's message first
Error 108 can point to a message on the bank's website. Review that message with the authorized account holder before refreshing the connection.

Applies to: QuickBooks Online, U.S. edition, browser workflow checked October 2, 2026. This guide does not apply QuickBooks Desktop repair steps or claim a current bank outage.
A failed bank download can interrupt the close, but error 108 does not justify changing unrelated bookkeeping entries. Begin with the specific connection message and keep a short record of what was checked. That record helps the account holder, bookkeeper and support team coordinate their next step.
What Intuit says to check
Intuit’s error 108 article says the bank or card provider has a website message that may block the connection. Sign in to the relevant bank website using the account associated with QuickBooks and review the required action. Messages may concern terms, maintenance or offers. The authorized account holder should decide how to handle any account or legal choice.
For QuickBooks Online, Intuit currently directs users through All apps, Accounting and Bank transactions, then Update. If no message appears and the error remains, its guidance includes contacting the bank and trying a private browser session. Navigation may change; use the linked vendor article for the current interface.
Keep the investigation bounded
Record the bank connection name, error text, time of the attempt and the last successful download date. Note whether a bank message was found and whether the connection update changed the result. Do not copy passwords, one-time codes or full account numbers into a shared troubleshooting note.
For example, imagine a team sees error 108 during its weekly review. The account holder finds a message in the bank portal, reviews it, and the bookkeeper later retries the update. If the error remains, the handover should say exactly that. It should not say the bank has a widespread outage, or that the records are fixed, without evidence.
Review the data after recovery
When downloads resume, compare the coverage period and recent transactions with the expected records. A successful connection is one checkpoint; completing the bookkeeping review is another. Keep a separate list of missing documents or reconciliation questions so they do not disappear when the error banner does.
If the close relies on manual records while support investigates, label their period and source clearly. A cloud-accounting workflow should make it clear which information came from the feed and which was reviewed separately.
Questions about error 108
Does 108 prove that the password is wrong?
No. This article concerns the vendor’s bank-message guidance. Investigate the exact error before applying advice for another code.
Should I disconnect the account immediately?
Do not make that a generic first step. Resolve the identified condition using current vendor guidance and preserve the bookkeeping context.
What proves the issue is resolved?
Record the successful update and review the retrieved period. A dismissed notification alone does not establish complete transaction coverage.

QuickBooks FAQs
Can I use a Desktop error guide for QuickBooks Online?
Only when the guide explicitly covers that product. First identify whether you use Desktop or Online and record the exact message.
Does a connection error prove a company file is damaged?
An error message alone is not enough to establish file damage. Identify the affected task and follow the relevant vendor diagnostic guidance.
Who should change a shared hosting setup?
The person responsible for the server or hosting provider should review changes affecting other users. Record the current setup before making approved changes.
