Retrieve a 2024 TurboTax Online return and label the copy clearly
Download the relevant return copy, distinguish a readable PDF from a software data file and record exactly which version you retained.

Applies to: TurboTax Online, U.S. edition, retrieval of a 2024 return through a web browser. Vendor guidance checked October 2, 2026. Not a Desktop installation guide or proof of IRS acceptance.
Before sending a prior-year return to a reviewer, check that the file is the intended year’s return and identify the version you retained. A file called taxes-final-final is hard to distinguish from an earlier draft. A clear document label and a short review note reduce that uncertainty.
Use the correct Online account and year
TurboTax’s 2024 return-copy guidance directs users to sign in, open Tax Home and find Your tax returns & documents. Select 2024, then choose Download/print return (PDF) for a readable copy. The separate .tax download is the software data file. If the expected returns are absent, the vendor suggests checking whether another account was used; expired access has its own displayed recovery instructions.
These are U.S. Online instructions for a 2024 return. Check the linked guidance if navigation differs. Do not assume that a menu path for this workflow also describes every Desktop version or another country’s product.
Review the downloaded document
- Open the copy in a trusted viewer and confirm that the expected tax year appears.
- Check the taxpayer and document scope before sharing it with anyone.
- Note whether it is the retained original return copy, an amended-return copy or a working document.
- Store it in the approved private location and use a consistent name that avoids unnecessary personal identifiers.
- Keep any acceptance or submission evidence alongside it as a separate record.
Example: two files serve different purposes
Imagine a taxpayer has a readable PDF and a software data file in the same folder. A reviewer only needs to inspect the return. The handover can name the readable copy and explain its year and version without sending every file in the folder. If a preparer later requests the data file for a specific task, agree on the purpose and secure transfer method separately.
Downloading or opening a PDF does not, by itself, prove that a return was accepted. Likewise, a file’s modified date is not a substitute for a reviewed version history. Keep those distinctions explicit when organizing the records used for an accounting handover.
Questions about return copies
Is the .tax file the same as the PDF?
No. The vendor offers separate downloads for a readable return and software data. Select the type needed for the task.
What if 2024 is missing?
Check the account and vendor access guidance. Do not create or amend a return merely to make a missing document appear.
Should I attach the return to an ordinary public enquiry?
No. Establish a verified secure handover with the intended recipient before sharing private tax records.

TurboTax FAQs
Should I follow a Desktop guide in TurboTax Online?
Check the scope first. Desktop installation and local-file instructions may not apply to TurboTax Online.
What details help identify a TurboTax issue?
Record the edition, tax year, operating system, exact message and whether it happened while opening, preparing or transmitting a return.
Does opening a tax file confirm that it was filed?
No. File access and filing status are separate. Check the filing acknowledgment through the appropriate product workflow.
