Drake Tax restore: inspect the backup and destination before replacing files
Review backup contents, target tax year and current work before restoring client files in Drake Tax.

Applies to: Drake Tax desktop for Windows, U.S.; use the tax year matching the backup. Current vendor restore article checked October 12, 2026; confirm year-specific screens.
A backup can be valid and still be the wrong backup for the job. Before a restore, establish which client files are needed, which tax year they belong to and what current work might be affected.
Drake’s restore guide provides a preview and custom-selection stage. Its backup guidance also specifies using the same Drake Tax year when restoring to another computer. Use those checkpoints to make the scope explicit.
Prepare a restore brief
- Backup creation date, location and descriptive name.
- Tax year and target installation.
- Clients and supporting files needed.
- Reason for restoring and the latest work to preserve.
- Authorized operator and review plan after completion.
Preserve current work through the firm’s approved backup procedure before replacing files. Coordinate with other users so nobody assumes their recent edits will survive an older restore.
Use the preview before confirmation
The vendor workflow starts under Tools, File Maintenance, Restore. Select the backup location and backup, then use Preview to inspect the restore options. Choose the intended items rather than defaulting to a full restore without checking its scope. Stop before the confirmation if the client list or tax year is unexpected.
For a hypothetical missing client file, a full-office restore may be much broader than needed. The operator documents why a selective restore is appropriate, preserves current data, then follows the current vendor steps. After completion, follow Drake’s index-repair instructions and check the restored client under Open/Create; the guide notes that Personal Client Manager visibility can depend on calculation.
Our bookkeeping and accounting service can help organize the records and review questions behind this workflow.

Drake FAQs
Does e-file eligibility confirm acceptance?
No. Read the actual acknowledgment for the relevant return and jurisdiction. Eligibility and acceptance are different stages.
Should I retransmit a pending return immediately?

Does every Drake product use the same instructions?
No. Check whether the article covers Drake Tax, Drake Tax Online or another Drake product, and verify the applicable tax year.
