Sage Accounting Canada: carry unresolved bank items into the opening review
Prepare the final trial balance, bank statements and uncleared items before establishing opening balances in Sage Accounting.

Applies to: Sage Accounting cloud product, Canada; browser-based opening-balance preparation. Not Sage 50 or Sage Intacct. Vendor guidance checked October 12, 2026.
Moving to a new accounting system should preserve the explanation behind a bank balance. A statement total alone does not describe uncleared cheques, unpaid customer invoices or supplier credits that still need attention.
Sage’s opening-balance guidance for Accounting calls for the prior-period trial balance, unpaid customer and supplier items, bank statements and unreconciled bank items. It recommends starting at the beginning of an accounting period so the previous system’s closing information can be compared consistently.
Prepare a cutover folder
- Agreed start date for Sage Accounting and the preceding closing date.
- Final reviewed trial balance from the old system.
- Customer and supplier open-item listings with invoice and credit references.
- Bank statements and the final reconciliation.
- A separate list of uncleared items, with date, amount and explanation.
Keep an uncleared cheque visible
Suppose a hypothetical business has issued a $420 cheque that has not yet cleared at the cutover date. The migration review must explain where that item appears in the closing records and how it will be tracked in the new system. Copying only a headline balance can lose that explanation; adding the cheque again without checking can duplicate it.
Have the responsible accountant review the opening entries and reconcile them to the old-system evidence. Retain both references and an exception list. Do not invent an adjustment just to make two totals agree, and avoid mixing transactions after the start date into the opening-balance support.
Our bookkeeping and accounting service can help organize the records and review questions behind this workflow.
