Filing an older return? Check the current calendar year's IRS IP PIN
Keep the return's tax year separate from the calendar year of filing when preparing an IRS IP PIN handover.

Applies to: U.S. individual federal returns filed during calendar year 2026 where an IP PIN is required. Includes the distinction between tax year and filing calendar year.
A tax folder may contain the correct return and an outdated identity protection PIN. The year printed on the return and the calendar year in which it is filed are different checks. Keeping those checks separate can prevent an avoidable filing interruption.
The IRS IP PIN FAQs explain that a new PIN is generated each year and the current calendar year’s PIN is used on returns filed in that year, including delinquent returns. This is separate from any software sign-in code or self-selected e-file PIN.
Prepare a handover without exposing the number
- Record the return’s tax year and intended filing calendar year.
- Identify whose PIN is needed: taxpayer, spouse or dependent, as applicable.
- Have the authorized person retrieve the PIN through the appropriate official channel.
- Agree a secure transfer method with the appointed preparer.
- Record completion of the handover separately from the confidential PIN itself.
- After filing, check the actual acknowledgment rather than assuming preparation means acceptance.
For example, an adult preparing to file a 2024 return during 2026 should distinguish the 2024 tax documents from the PIN applicable to the 2026 filing calendar year. A spreadsheet can track “current PIN provided” without storing the number in a widely shared task list.
Use the official retrieval route
The IRS’s retrieval guidance points existing users to their Online Account Profile. It also explains assistance when online retrieval is unavailable, including the special route for minors. It says not to submit Form 15227 when an IP PIN has already been assigned. Check the page for current service availability and mailing restrictions.
If retrieval remains unresolved, tell the preparer exactly which step is pending. Avoid guessing a number, repeatedly transmitting the same rejected return or placing a PIN in an ordinary website contact form.
For broader organization of the records supporting a filing, see our bookkeeping and accounting service. Do not include an IP PIN, SSN or tax return in the initial enquiry.
