Form 4506: confirm you need a full return copy before requesting one
Clarify the exact return, year and document required before requesting a full copy from the IRS.

Applies to: U.S. federal Form 4506 and Form 4506-T; current IRS source pages checked October 12, 2026. Confirm the current form revision and instructions at use.
Someone asks for a tax return, but that phrase may describe a full copy, a transcript or a document already held in your records. Clarifying the requirement first avoids ordering the wrong item and sending more personal information than necessary.
The IRS identifies Form 4506 as the request for a copy of a tax return. Form 4506-T is for transcripts. Confirm what the receiving organization accepts before selecting a route.
Write a request brief first
- Name the receiving organization and the purpose of the request.
- Obtain its exact document requirement, including tax form and period.
- Check your own securely stored filed copy and ask whether it is acceptable.
- If an IRS copy is necessary, obtain the current Form 4506 and read its instructions, including current fee, signing and mailing requirements.
- Have the taxpayer or authorized signer review the completed scope before submission.
A request that is too broad
A hypothetical owner is asked for a particular year’s return but prepares a request covering several years. The review should stop and confirm whether those additional years are needed. More pages do not necessarily answer the recipient’s question better; they create extra handling and disclosure.
Keep a private log of the requested periods, submission method, date and response. Record whether the delivered document actually matches the brief. Avoid placing taxpayer identifiers or copies in a general customer-service enquiry.
Our bookkeeping and accounting service can help organize the records and review questions behind this workflow.
Copy-request questions
Is a transcript an exact copy?
No. Confirm the recipient’s requirement rather than assuming the documents are interchangeable.
Should I use a saved old form?
Download the current IRS form and check its instructions when preparing the request.
Does this request authorize representation?
Do not treat a document request as a substitute for the separate authorization appropriate to representation or disclosure.
