QuickBooks Desktop H202: identify the host before changing settings
Start a multi-user connection investigation with a clear map of the server, workstations and affected task.

Applies to: QuickBooks Desktop multi-user access. This is independent educational guidance, not QuickBooks Online instructions or official Intuit support.
When one colleague can open a company file and another sees H202, a quick setting change can look tempting. First identify where the file is hosted and which computers are workstations. That small inventory gives the person troubleshooting the issue a reliable starting point.
What Intuit says about H202
Intuit explains that H202 concerns blocked communication between workstations and the server hosting the company file. Its documented route includes running Database Server Manager on the server through QuickBooks Tool Hub, then testing multi-user access. Follow the current Intuit H202 and H505 guide for the exact workflow and supported setup.
Prepare a short incident note
- Which QuickBooks Desktop version is in use?
- Where is the company file normally hosted?
- Which workstation shows the exact error?
- Can other authorized users open that same file?
- What changed before the first failure: a move, update, hosting change or network interruption?
Record observations separately from guesses. “Two workstations affected after a server restart” is useful evidence; “the company file is corrupt” is a conclusion the error alone does not establish.
Keep changes coordinated
Ask the server administrator or hosting provider to own shared configuration changes. Do not have several people independently alter hosting or firewall settings. After an approved troubleshooting step, test the affected workstation and record the result before moving on.
Keep a current recovery plan and avoid creating competing working copies of the company file as an improvised fix. If the hosting arrangement is unclear, resolve that question with the responsible provider first.
H202 questions
Is H202 a QuickBooks Online error guide?
This article covers Desktop multi-user access only.
Should every computer host the file?
No. Intuit identifies the server as the computer that should host multi-user access; workstation and server roles must be distinguished.
Should I disable the firewall?
Do not use blanket firewall disabling as a shortcut. Have the administrator follow the vendor’s specific configuration guidance.

QuickBooks FAQs
Can I use a Desktop error guide for QuickBooks Online?
Only when the guide explicitly covers that product. First identify whether you use Desktop or Online and record the exact message.
Does a connection error prove a company file is damaged?
An error message alone is not enough to establish file damage. Identify the affected task and follow the relevant vendor diagnostic guidance.
Who should change a shared hosting setup?
The person responsible for the server or hosting provider should review changes affecting other users. Record the current setup before making approved changes.
