Quicken Classic CC-506: review account identity before reconnecting
Check changed, closed and older connected accounts before treating CC-506 as a reason to create another account record.

Applies to: Quicken Classic for Windows, U.S. online-services workflow. Do not apply the Windows sequence to Mac or Simplifi without their own documentation.
A downloaded account connection can become unclear after an institution changes an account reference or an old connection remains in the file. The first useful step is to map the accounts that already exist, not to assume another account must be created.
Quicken’s CC-506 support article explains that it cannot identify which account should receive downloaded information. It lists closed accounts, changed account numbers or nicknames, and older still-connected accounts as possible circumstances. These are possibilities to investigate, not a diagnosis of every occurrence.
Create a small account map
Record the institution name, local account nickname, masked account reference and whether the account is open, closed or hidden. Add the connection status shown in Quicken. Keep full account numbers and credentials out of general support notes.
- Confirm the exact error and the installed Quicken Classic Windows release.
- List all accounts associated with the affected institution, including older ones.
- Compare the current institution references with the saved account map.
- Preserve a backup before any approved connection changes.
- Use Quicken’s current full instructions for any refresh or reconnection.
- Afterward, check the destination account and recent activity for gaps or duplicates.
A changed nickname is a clue, not proof
Imagine a fictional household account changed from “Everyday” to “Main Checking” at its institution. The local file still contains the older label and a separate closed account. The reviewer documents both facts before following the vendor’s troubleshooting sequence.
The purpose is to prevent a rushed choice from linking downloaded information to the wrong local history. A successful connection message still needs a review of the resulting account and transaction dates.
Escalate with useful evidence
If the current official procedure does not resolve the problem, provide support with the product version, institution and masked account map. Do not repeatedly recreate records or delete history just to remove the message. Our cloud accounting and bookkeeping service can help organize the review evidence.
CC-506 questions
Does the code prove the account was closed?
No. Closure is one possible circumstance in the vendor’s explanation.
Should a second local account be created immediately?
First identify the intended existing account and follow the applicable vendor procedure.
Does a new connection prove the books are correct?
No. Review the account mapping and resulting transactions.

Quicken FAQs
Are Windows and Mac error codes interchangeable?
Do not assume so. Identify the operating system and exact task, such as adding an account or updating an existing one.
What should I record before contacting support?
Note the code, time, affected institution, product version and whether the problem affects one account or several. Remove personal details from screenshots.
Should I share my bank login in the contact form?
No. Describe the issue without credentials or account numbers. Bank authentication should occur only in the appropriate authorized product flow.
