Sage Accounting Canada: investigate a nonzero bank reconciliation difference
Review statement inputs and selected transactions before completing a Sage Accounting Canada bank reconciliation with an unexplained difference.

Applies to: Sage Accounting Canada cloud/browser edition, also referred to in the site category as Sage One / Sage Accounting. Not Sage 50. Checked October 1, 2026.
A nonzero reconciliation difference is a question to investigate. Do not create a balancing transaction simply to make the screen look complete. First check the statement information and which existing transactions belong to that statement.
For Sage Accounting Canada, Sage’s guidance starts reconciliation from the bank account and uses the statement date and ending balance. It directs users to check selected items and balance information when a difference remains. Missing items can require checking dates, filters, the account and whether a transaction was already reconciled. The workflow also provides a way to save for later. Sage’s Canadian bank-reconciliation guide.
Confirm the statement boundary
Use the actual statement, not a remembered balance or an unrelated online “available” amount. Record its account reference, currency, period ending date and closing figure in the restricted reconciliation file. Make sure the Sage account and statement refer to the same bank account.
Check the entered statement details before investigating individual transactions. A correct transaction list cannot compensate for the wrong statement cutoff or closing balance.
Review the unmatched items with evidence
- Compare each selected item with the corresponding statement entry.
- Look for a missing or wrongly selected item equal to the difference, but treat that as a clue rather than proof.
- Check the date range and account when an expected entry is absent.
- Review the prior closing position if the opening position needs explanation.
- Document unresolved items and save the work for later review where appropriate.
A small example
Suppose the difference is $45 and the team notices a $45 item near the statement cutoff. Before selecting it, confirm that the actual statement includes it and that its date, direction and reference match. The same amount alone is insufficient: it could be a later transaction or an unrelated payment.
If the evidence remains unclear, leave a review note explaining what was checked and who will resolve it. A second reviewer should be able to continue without repeating the whole investigation. Any correction to the accounting records should follow the business’s normal review process.
Keep completion evidence together
Once the reconciliation is appropriately completed, retain the relevant report and statement in the same controlled record set. Record any approved correction and its reason so a later reviewer can understand how the difference was resolved.

Reconciliation difference questions
Should I use a balancing adjustment immediately?
No. Establish the actual cause and obtain the required review before deciding whether any entry is needed.
What if I cannot find the expected transaction?
Check the account, dates and selection context against the official guide. Record what is missing instead of recreating it without checking for an existing entry.
Can I leave the investigation unfinished?
Use the product’s save-for-later option where applicable and record the unresolved difference and next owner. Do not describe an unfinished reconciliation as complete.
