TurboTax Online 2025: decide whether you need a data file or a PDF
Choose the correct file for continued preparation or readable records, and preserve its year, version and filing evidence.

Applies to: U.S. TurboTax Online, tax year 2025, browser workflow. Desktop compatibility must match the tax year; this is not an amendment or transmission guide.
“Send me a copy” is an incomplete instruction when the record is a tax return. A person who wants to read the finished return and a person who needs to continue work in compatible tax software may need different files.
TurboTax’s Online data-file guidance describes a 2025 export named taxReturn.tax2025. It says the file can be opened in the software, while a PDF is the more accessible option for simply keeping a readable copy. It also cautions against changing the filename extension.
Clarify the purpose before downloading
- Confirm the tax year and whether the recipient needs to read or continue editing.
- Use the signed-in account that contains the intended return.
- Follow the current product’s export option; navigation can differ.
- Retain the original extension when adding a useful internal filename.
- Record the export time and whether it represents work in progress or a reviewed version.
- Store and transfer the file through a controlled location appropriate for tax data.
Do not rename a PDF to .tax2025 and expect it to become editable return data. Likewise, renaming a data file to .pdf does not turn it into a readable report. If an export option is absent, describe the product and account state to official support rather than deleting a return to experiment.
Keep versions understandable
A hypothetical folder might contain an October 8 working export and a later reviewed copy. The handover index should say which file the recipient is meant to use. Preserve the earlier copy when it explains a review change, but avoid sending an unlabelled collection and leaving the recipient to guess.
A locally saved file is also separate from filing evidence. Retain any relevant submission and acceptance records with the handover rather than assuming the file’s existence proves that filing occurred.
Our cloud accounting and bookkeeping service can help organize the supporting record workflow. Do not upload tax files or credentials to an ordinary enquiry form.
