Before amending in TurboTax, confirm the original return’s status
Organize the original filing status, changed document and tax year before deciding how to correct a TurboTax return.

Applies to: TurboTax U.S. individual returns, with a 2025 return as the example. Status review is applicable before following the product-specific Online or Desktop amendment instructions; this is not a button-by-button filing guide.
Finding a new document after working on a return creates a review question, not an automatic instruction to file another return. Start by identifying the tax year and whether the original was actually filed. Preserve the original copy before comparing any proposed correction.
Start with the evidence
TurboTax distinguishes an unfiled return, which can be edited, from a pending e-file, for which it says to wait at least until acceptance before amending. A rejected return generally needs correction and resubmission rather than an amendment. Its guidance identifies Form 1040-X as the individual amended-return form and includes corrected tax documents that change tax due or refund among amendment situations. A practical review checklist
- Save the original return copy and filing-status evidence with the tax year clearly labeled.
- Identify exactly what changed: a corrected form, omitted information or another specific fact. Preserve both the original and changed document.
- Write a short comparison listing affected amounts and questions for the reviewer without editing the original evidence.
- Confirm the appropriate correction route with the current product guidance and tax adviser, including any related state-return implications.
- Use the instructions for the actual tax year and product once the route is decided. Keep submission and later acknowledgment records with the correction package.
A worked review example
Assume a taxpayer receives a corrected 2025 information document after transmitting a return. The e-file is still pending. The review folder contains the submitted copy, status evidence, both documents and a note describing the change. The taxpayer waits for the status decision and reviews the correction route rather than sending an immediate second original return. This example does not determine the tax effect of the document.

Questions about this workflow
Does every new document require an amendment?
No. Review whether it changes relevant return information and the tax result, along with the original filing status.
Can I correct a return that has not been filed?
Use the product’s normal editing process for an unfiled return and review the result before filing; keep clear version labels.
What if the IRS sent a notice?
Read the notice’s instructions before choosing an amendment. The appropriate response depends on what the notice actually requests.

No. File access and filing status are separate. Check the filing acknowledgment through the appropriate product workflow.
