TurboTax Desktop backup: verify the copy opens before relying on it
Name and verify a separate tax-data backup, then keep it distinct from the working return.

Applies to: TurboTax Desktop U.S., 2025 tax data, Windows or Mac as noted by Intuit; not TurboTax Online.
A file visible in a folder is not enough to establish that it is the intended usable backup. Separate three questions: which return was copied, where the copy was saved and whether that copy opens. Keep the working file clear so the next edit does not accidentally occur in an old backup.
Intuit's Desktop guidance uses Save As on Windows and Save on Mac, with a distinct backup name and location. It also instructs users to reopen the backup to check that it opens. Confirm the product and year before following these instructions. Intuit: Back up a TurboTax Desktop tax file.
A focused review checklist
- Confirm taxpayer file, product and tax year before starting.
- Use the vendor's platform-specific save instructions and a distinctive backup name.
- Record the chosen location without sharing the tax file through an ordinary contact form.
- Close and reopen the intended backup as described by Intuit.
- After the check, clearly identify the working file and repeat backup handling after later changes.
A hypothetical example
A hypothetical folder contains final, final2 and final-new files. Those names do not establish which one contains the latest changes. A dated backup label, a recorded source and a successful open check make the handover easier to understand. Do not mistake a PDF copy for an editable tax-data backup.
Protect both copies using the owner's approved storage and access arrangements. Opening a backup verifies a limited property: it does not certify that every return entry is correct or that an e-file was accepted. Retain filing acknowledgments separately.
