TurboTax Desktop: refresh the PDF after editing your return
An older PDF can survive after a return is edited. Refresh the copy, check the changed section and label the review version clearly.

Applies to: TurboTax Desktop, United States, Windows workflow. Tax-year 2025 is used only in the hypothetical record-control example. Not the TurboTax Online download workflow or Canadian edition.
An old PDF can look complete even after the return has changed. If someone reviews that older copy, the conversation may concern figures that are no longer in the working return. This checklist is for TurboTax Desktop’s U.S. Windows workflow and focuses on keeping the review copy aligned with the version being discussed.
Refresh the exported copy after a change
TurboTax’s current Desktop instructions start with the return open: choose File, then Print/Save for Your Records, followed by Save As PDF or Preview Print Copy. Its guidance says to repeat the process after changing the original return so the tax file and PDF copy agree. See TurboTax’s official Desktop PDF instructions.
Choose a destination you can identify later. Before saving, decide whether the copy is a draft for discussion, a reviewed copy or a historical reference. Use a simple internal naming convention that includes the tax year and review date without placing a Social Security number in the filename.
Check the content before handing it over
- Confirm whose return and which tax year are open. Note the purpose of the requested review.
- Save the working changes through the established process, then create the fresh PDF using the vendor’s instructions.
- Open the saved PDF from its destination folder, not from a familiar shortcut to an older copy.
- Compare the section that changed with the working return and the underlying document. Check the related totals relevant to that review.
- Record the filename, review status, reviewer and location. Make the intended copy explicit in the handover message.
A short version note is useful when several people contribute evidence. It can say what changed and what remains unresolved. For example, “Updated the document reference discussed in the review; owner confirmation still pending.” That is more precise than naming every successive file “final.”
An illustrative handover
Imagine a hypothetical tax-year 2025 return being prepared in the Windows Desktop product. A reviewer receives a PDF on Monday. On Tuesday, the preparer corrects an entry after checking a source document. The Monday PDF remains in the shared folder, so a colleague could accidentally use it for the next discussion.
The preparer exports a fresh review copy, opens it, checks the revised section and updates the handover note. The previous file remains identifiable as the earlier review version according to the owner’s retention process. The colleague receives the exact new filename and the question still requiring a decision. The example describes document handling, not a recommendation about the tax treatment of any entry.
Keep review status explicit
Do not describe a PDF as an accepted filing merely because it was saved successfully. Keep filing-status evidence in its own part of the record. If a return has already been filed and a change is being considered, establish the appropriate process with the responsible tax professional before making further edits.

Questions about refreshed PDF copies
Will an existing PDF update when the return changes?
Use a fresh export. TurboTax specifically instructs users to repeat its PDF-saving steps after edits.
Is the newest filename enough to confirm the right copy?
No. Open the file and inspect the relevant content. A descriptive filename helps locate a copy but does not prove what is inside it.
Should I delete every earlier PDF?
Follow the owner’s retention process. Clearly distinguish previous review copies from the version currently under review instead of removing records without an agreed rule.

TurboTax FAQs
Should I follow a Desktop guide in TurboTax Online?
Check the scope first. Desktop installation and local-file instructions may not apply to TurboTax Online.
What details help identify a TurboTax issue?
Record the edition, tax year, operating system, exact message and whether it happened while opening, preparing or transmitting a return.
Does opening a tax file confirm that it was filed?
No. File access and filing status are separate. Check the filing acknowledgment through the appropriate product workflow.
